What is 500 Rummy: Rules, Scoring & More

Two to eight people may participate in the card game 500 Rummy, sometimes called Pinochle Rummy. Here are some essential details regarding the 500 Rummy rules, scoring, and other components

Objective

The goal of 500 Rummy is to be the first player to reach 500 points. Forming sets (three or more cards of the same rank) and runs (three or more cards in a row of the same suit) results in points.

Deal and Deck

A conventional 52-card deck is used in 500 Rummy. Each player gets 13 cards in a game with two players, compared to 7 cards with three or more players. The stockpile comprises the remaining cards, with the top card facing up to begin the discard pile.

How to play?

Each player draws a card from the stockpile or selects the top card from the discard pile. They must add one card to the discard pile after drawing. By placing eligible sets and runs on the table, the goal is to form melds.

Scoring

The precise formula for 500 Rummy scoring may change, but face cards (Jacks, Queens, and Kings) are for 10 points apiece, Aces are worth 1, and numbered cards are worth their face value. After each round, players get points for the cards still in their hands.

Knocking

If players have the necessary amount of melds and can place them on the table, they may knock. They complete the game by knocking, giving the other players one more chance to attempt to lower their score.
